Fire Safety - Have An Escape Plan

Be Prepared

Contrary to popular belief, the smell of smoke will not awaken you. As a matter of fact, the poisonous gases actually put you into a deeper sleep. Since the majority of fatal fires happen at night, it is essential to have working smoke detectors throughout your home to awaken you in a fire emergency.

For the best protection, make sure you have at least one smoke detector on each level of your home and in or near all sleeping areas. Test the alarms each month and replace batteries once a year. Smoke detectors that are a part of a monitored alarm system will automatically send a signal to have the fire department summoned.

Get Out Immediately!

When fire strikes your home, authorities say you may have as little as one to two minutes to escape. It is imperative that you have a well rehearsed Escape Plan which includes all members of your family that are old enough to understand, and provides for those that are not able to escape on their own.

Study and practice an Escape Plan – it could save your life and the lives of those you love. When dealing with a fire, there is no time to gather personal belongings. The time you take trying could mean the difference between life and death. So always follow the golden rule of survival in the event of a fire, and GET OUT IMMEDIATELY!

Do not call the fire department while you are still in your home. Gather children and any disabled family members that are in your home and GET OUT. Call the fire department after you and your family are safe. Do NOT try to fight the fire. Let the firefighters do their job. Your only goal should be to get everyone out of danger.

Unfortunately, escaping a fire is rarely easy. Because of the unpredictable nature of fire, and the manner in which it spreads, it is difficult to know where and when it will strike. For this reason, it is important to establish procedures in advance for a successful escape.

"Why I Don't Need An Alarm System."

Did you see the headlines this week?

Armed men ransack home, lock aunt in the closet.

Police look for burglar.

Police need help finding murderer.

Criminal activity is happening in areas where crime used to be rare.

Would it make sense to have tens of thousands of dollars of valuables, home furnishings or inventory but no way to protect it from theft or vandalism? In spite of all the newspaper headlines and TV news reports, there are still people who say they do not need an alarm system.

Let’s talk about some of the excuses or reasons for “Why I don’t need an alarm system.”

Reason #1: I have insurance

This is my personal all time favorite excuse. My response is that burglar alarms are like insurance. We never plan to get into a car accident or become sick; we still purchase automobile and health insurance. We purchase home owners insurance, but that only helps to replace items stolen in a break-in. An alarm system is like another form of insurance, but even better because it helps prevent the break-in. FBI statistics show that a home without an alarm
system is three times more likely to be broken into.

Most insurance companies will give you a discount on your homeowner’s insurance premium if you have a monitored alarm system. The discount varies from company to company ranging from as low as 5% to as high as 20% if you install dead-bolt locks and other security measures. Why would they offer a discount? Insurance companies know that homes that are secured are less likely to be burglarized. I say this often – burglars are lazy, they look for the easy target (the home without protection).

Reason #2: It won't happen to me. I live in a safe neighorhood.

Please don’t be so naive as to confuse your nice neighborhood with a safe neighborhood. Think about it. If a burglar is going to break into a house, don’t they want to steal the most valuables they can on each invasion?

Reason #3: Someone is always home.

ALWAYS? Burglars have been known to read the newspaper and then target homes while the family is at a funeral or wedding. Burglars do not only break into vacant houses or strike only at night. There are many reported cases of burglars striking in the afternoon or when the homeowner is taking a nap. In many ways this is even more frightening, this presents a danger to your loved one that is “always home”.

Don’t be one of the many people who protect their home after it is burglarized. To receive more information about protecting your home, family and valuables call Central Monitoring at 229-431-0800 and schedule a Free Security Evaluation today.

Sounds Too Good To Be True

The security industry is incredibly competitive which is very good for the customer. It has made us nothing but stronger. The competition improves the product and makes the pricing structure very competitive.

The biggest difference that we have seen when our consumers used other options is their issue of being unable to get timely repair service and the lower quality equipment these companies use.

LARGE NATIONALS

Big marketing budgets. Hard to get in touch with for service. You represent very little of their business. Should you have a problem then you are one out of 10 million customers. If it is an authorized dealer, they literally sell you, install you and then sell you back to corporate. It’s best to go with the corporate group if this is your choice.

SUMMER PROGRAMS & ONLINE

Known for their aggressive door knocking campaigns. They fly folks in from out of state, work the summer, install systems and then hope to try to service you from half the country away. Please look up reviews for these types of companies with the Better Business Bureau and on Google. You will be glad you did. Install It Yourself: Here is a box of equipment. Good luck!

MONITOR YOURSELF

What if you and your cell phone are out of range or asleep? Do you really want to deal with trying to reach authorities if you receive a signal when you are at your son’s ballgame, a concert or a family event?

TELEPHONE & CABLE COMPANIES

The Bundlers are bundling the monitoring services disguising what they charge. They are using third party sub-contractors to install and service. Have you ever had a problem with one of these providers? Have you ever been told, “We will be there between 8 am and 12 pm, and they arrive at 2:00 pm? These types of systems literally tie you down even further into your cable company – leaving you to pay $100 to $200 a month.

Before you decide to go with one of these options, talk with a Central Monitoring representative. Choose fast service, high quality Honeywell equipment from a locally owned, award winning, stable company that is fully insured, bonded and licensed. Choose Central Monitoring.
